BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST

Located in southwestern Uganda, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is said to be Africa’s oldest rainforest. It is world-renowned for its excellent gorilla-sighting opportunities. The rugged landscape features dense jungle, cascading waterfalls, sparkling mountain streams, deep valleys and steep ridges. This untouched forest has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its breathtaking natural beauty and unique ecological significance. Aside from the amazing gorilla interactions, there are other drawcards such as a network of forest walks, over 340 species of bird to spot and a variety of butterflies. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the spectacular Virunga Volcanoes.

The afternoon is at leisure to take part in any optional activities (at an additional cost payable directly to the Camp/lodge) that include: – a forest walk, local community visit and guided birding.

All meals and overnight at Buhoma Lodge

Day 3 – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Encounter with Gorillas

After breakfast you will be taken on a short drive to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing and allocation to your trekking group. Set out on an early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes, led by experienced trackers who likely will bring you amongst a family of mountain gorillas.  These massive primates are extremely rare and it is therefore a great privilege to spend time with them.  Once found a maximum of one hour is allowed with the gorillas to avoid stress on them.

Note: The trekking can be fairly strenuous and can last for six hours or more at relatively high altitude.  Conditions are generally very muddy / slippery and there are uphill sections, which may be quite steep.  Participants should be in good physical condition and free of illness.  Anyone showing signs of illness will not be permitted to trek.

After time with the gorillas you return to camp with hopefully a few unforgettable memories of a rare and wondrous experience. If the gorilla groups are relatively close, you’ll also have the chance to hike nearby forest trails to obtain a better understanding of the forest and its other inhabitants. These hikes provide the opportunity to observe smaller primate species and regional, endemic birds.

Rest of the afternoon is at leisure.
